Brew Tips
Not sure where to get started with making your coffee at home? No worries, we have some tips guaranteed to get you good results.
Water
- Use filtered water for brewing your coffee. We love the LifeStraw Pitcher (Not a sponsor)
- If your water tastes bad, your coffee will too
Espresso (Double Shot)
Espresso is not easy but very rewarding for those who have the equipment. Here's our favorite process for consistently beautiful espresso shots. Yes this many steps may be considered overkill but it covers all the possible ways to resolve potential channeling issues.
- Grind 18 grams of beans very fine into the portafilter. When we're pulling our shot we want 36 grams of espresso in 30 seconds. Adjust your grind accordingly if the water flow is too fast or slow
- Take the end of a paperclip and stir/fluff the grounds. There should be no lumps
- Use your finger or straight edge to perform the NSEW or your favorite distribution method
- Use a distribution tool to smooth out the top layer
- Tamp moderately - if you feel like you're pushing too hard you probably are
- Recently we're in favor of NOT polishing. Lift straight up after tamping
- Blow any stray grounds off the top of the puck
- Gently lock the portafilter into the machine
- (Optional) Go ahead and steam your milk before you start your shot
- Start your shot and aim to get 36 grams of liquid in 25-35 seconds.
- Add your milk as needed
- Latte art your heart out
French Press
Follow this brewing template to make amazing French Press at home. This is our preferred brewing method and how all our roasts are judged for creation. French Press will result in a rich, full bodied coffee with all of the roasts flavor notes (We're biased sorry).
- Measure 30 grams of beans and 500 grams of water
- Grind your beans about medium course and place in the french press
- Bring your water just shy of a boil (200 degrees) then pour over your coffee evenly. Let it sit untouched for 4 minutes
- After 4 minutes stir to break the crust. Then scrape off the top level of foam and dispose of it somewhere (not your garbage disposal)
- Put the lid on the French Press but don't press yet. Let brew for 8 minutes
- After 8 minutes, press the plunger just far enough to touch the top of the coffee and pour.
- Life changing
Pour Over / V60
Pour Over is also great and many people's preference. The flavors will be brighter and crisper compared to French Press but without the same rich and deep flavors.
- Measure 30 grams of beans and 500 grams of water
- Grind to Medium-Fine and place in cone. Make a small hole in center of coffee
- Get your water to 205 degrees and start your timer for pouring
- Pour 60 grams of water (center out) over 10 seconds. Swirl until mixed well (no lumps and completely covering all grounds)
- Let rest until 45 seconds then pour 240 grams of water over another 30 seconds (300 grams total by 1:15)
- Cone should be full. Keep it topped off and have all your water in by 2 minutes. Give a little stir one way then the other.
- When safe to do without spilling, swirl one last time
- Remove the cone when the coffee grounds appear dry. Enjoy!
